COSERE | 127 Symptoms and Signs of Occupational Burnout Early detection of signs of professional burnout is crucial for its prevention. However, these signs are not exclusive to professional burnout, making them difficult to identify. While most authors agree that the presence of many of the signs listed below indicates professional burnout, it’s rare for all symptoms to manifest simultaneously. At the individual level, Schoeffel and Enzman focus on five types of signs: affective, cognitive, physical, behavioural, and motivational. • Affective symptoms may include depressed or altered moods, feelings of sadness, emotional exhaustion, increased tension, and anxiety. • Cognitive symptoms encompass feelings of helplessness or loss of meaning and hope, a sense of being trapped, feelings of failure, low self-esteem, guilt, suicidal thoughts, difficulty concentrating, forgetfulness, and struggling to cope with tasks. • Physical symptoms may manifest as headaches, nausea, dizziness, muscle pain, sleep disturbances, gastrointestinal problems, and chronic fatigue. • Behavioural signs could include hyperactivity, impulsivity, increased consumption of caffeine, tobacco, alcohol, or illicit drugs, withdrawal from recreational activities, and engaging in obsessive complaining or denial. • Motivational signs may involve a loss of enthusiasm, idealism, or interest in work, as well as expressing feelings of disappointment or sadness.
