176 | COSERE Discussing the observed lesson Decide Where will it take place? Where will you sit? What questions will you ask to encourage students to discuss what they have observed? How will you ensure that the teacher speaks freely and openly about what they saw, even if their comments are not very positive? Will you follow any laws? How will you encourage the teacher to discuss what he saw, without expressing evaluation or criticism? How will you get the teacher to connect the observed with their teaching? How would you describe your role in this discussion? How will you end the discussion? How would you like you and the teacher to feel at the end of the discussion? Suggestions for analysing lesson progress 1. Find a quiet and cozy place. 2. Be positive, warm, and maintain eye contact. 3. Be honest. Remember your first practice. Do not forget that teachers are very sensitive to criticism when they take the first steps in teaching a lesson on their own. 4. Allow time between the lesson and your conversation, but always give a positive evaluation of the lesson immediately after the lesson. 5. Analysing the course of the lesson: • Ask questions and give them time to think about them. Plan your questions so that teachers analyse what they did in class after the questions you ask. For example: “Why did you choose this task? Was it successful? Why do you think so?” • Analyse the lesson in chronological order, discussing it step by step; • let the teachers find a solution for themselves, on what to do differently in the next lesson; • share your ideas, but also listen to the teachers’ ideas; 6. Together with the teachers, set realistic, specific goals for the next lesson.
