COSERE | 103 Family/Personal issues Family/personal difficulties, such as divorce, separation, or other domestic and personal problems, can impact everyone at all levels, and even if the original causes are personal or private, they can influence one’s behaviours at school. Lack of communication Insufficient communication among students, between students and teachers, or between teachers and parents can contribute to misunderstandings and conflicts. Cultural differences Cultural disparities can result in misunderstandings and conflicts, especially in diverse school environments, where no policies, programmes, or, in general, values are shared and sustained (i.e., respect, equity, non-discriminatory behaviours, etc.). Academic pressures/standards High academic expectations and standards can create tensions and stress. Social exclusion Being excluded or feeling isolated can lead to feelings of anger and frustration, generating conflicts. Personal changes Adolescents go through phases of physical and emotional changes that can affect their behaviours and relationships with others. Lack of support The absence of support from and within teachers, friends, or family can contribute to the emergence of conflicts. This is what happens after the dust settles, like if students start avoiding each other after a big blow-up.
