110 | COSERE Case study 1: “Teacher collaboration” • Background: A high school is implementing a new curriculum, and teachers have diverse opinions about its effectiveness. Some teachers are resistant to change, while others are enthusiastic. • Conflict: A heated disagreement arises during a faculty meeting between supporters of the new curriculum and those who prefer the traditional approach. Tensions are affecting collaboration and hindering the successful implementation of the curriculum. • Conflict Management Strategy: 1. Active listening. The School Leader/Principal conducts individual meetings with teachers to actively listen to their concerns and perspectives. 2. Facilitated discussion. A neutral facilitator is brought in to conduct a collaborative discussion respectfully. 3. Common ground identification. The facilitator helps teachers identify common goals and areas of agreement. Emphasis is placed on the shared commitment to student success. 4. Team-building activities. The School organises team-building activities and workshops to foster a sense of unity among the school community. This helps build positive relationships and reduce tension. 5. Implementation adjustments. The School Leadership Team makes minor adjustments to the curriculum, based on stakeholders’ feedback, demonstrating a commitment to continuous improvement. • Outcome: The conflict is successfully managed, leading to improved collaboration among teachers. The curriculum implementation proceeds more smoothly, and teachers feel more supported in adapting to the changes. Case study 2: “Students’ Dispute Resolution” • Background: Two students in a middle school are involved in a persistent conflict. The disagreement has escalated to the point where it’s affecting the classroom environment and causing stress for the students involved. • Conflict: The students have different versions of the conflict, and their disagreement is creating tension among their peers. Teachers are concerned about the impact on the school climate. • Conflict Management Strategy: 1. Mediation. The facilitator, trained in conflict mediation, meets with the students individually to understand their perspectives. A mediated meeting is scheduled with both students.
