How to use Storytelling to manage a conflict Another method that can be applied for conflict management is storytelling. Storytelling can be defined as the art of conveying messages, thoughts, and emotions through the narration of meaningful stories. This approach isn’t just about passing on information and content; it aims to create an emotional and meaningful interaction, conveying concepts, values, and ideas from one person to another. In the context of schools and conflict management, storytelling can be used to explore the experiences, feelings, and perspectives of people involved in conflicts, even without speaking in the first person, by projecting them onto characters and situations in the stories. Through the use of narrative devices, metaphors, and emotionally engaging scenarios, storytelling allows us to more easily adopt the perspective of others, improving active listening skills and empathy. For example, telling stories about characters facing similar situations to those experienced by the people involved can help convey positive messages and morally relevant teachings. The ability to cross multiple perspectives for problem resolution (referring to the previous chapter) also allows us to explore and confront different viewpoints, enriching our knowledge base. Moreover, storytelling can be a valuable tool for those who have difficulty expressing their ideas, feelings, and values directly and explicitly, allowing them to indirectly express what they feel with less exposure but still effectively.
