COSERE | 73 We now have an idea of some ways that we can distinguish between the three main styles of communication based on their approaches to tackling issues, but what nonverbal cues can we use to make this process of identification easier? We previously mentioned the possible insecurities and confidence issues of passive communicators. Accordingly, many of the physical behaviours that we associate with nervousness apply when identifying a passive communication style. Passive communicators may appear tentative or hesitant to contribute to discussions, struggle to maintain eye contact, or find themselves apologising excessively for the most minor of perceived infringements. Aggressive communicators, on the other hand, will tend to appear much more confrontational and impatient. Their needs and opinions will dominate the flow of conversation, often at the expense of others’. An assertive communicator, however, will calmly and confidently express their own feelings or thoughts in a clear yet respectful manner. They will maintain eye contact throughout and actively listen to and take on board the views and suggestions of others. As with all aspects of communication, the impact of communication styles extends far beyond individual interactions within the workplace. Communication styles are massively influential in the dynamics of families, communities, school groups, etc. By assessing the overall “feel” or atmosphere of a particular community or setting, we can try to surmise with some accuracy what the communication styles of some of the main “actors” involved are. If the impression of a setting is one of unspoken frustrations and a lack of collaboration, perhaps some of the most important characters present tend toward a passive style of communication. In a hostile environment, categorised by tension or high levels of stress, it’s quite likely that aggressive communicators are involved in the overall dynamic. Settings that enjoy an abundance of assertive communication, however, strike a pleasant middle ground; identifiable by the existence of healthy relationships, effective problem-solving, and clear boundaries. Now that we can distinguish between the three main styles of communication and understand the importance of assertiveness, we will explore the ways in which this crucial communication skill can be mustered to help develop and maintain healthy relationships. • Importance of Assertiveness: Understanding how assertiveness helps to develop and maintain healthy relationships.
